Thirds win Bowl game

Rowers battle to victory at John Oliver Park

Third div Bowl champs.
DELTA, B.C.—The game may have started with a TKO, but it was the Rowers who delivered the final knockout Nov. 23 as they fought their way to a 22-10 win over the Brit Lions in the 3rd division Bowl Final at John Oliver Park.

The Rowers’ final match for the fall season got going one minute in when the Brits hit a three from inside the Rowers 22-metre line. Then, only a minute later, the Brits’ flanker, Derek “Doddster” Dodd, smashed heads with Travis Sheppard, playing at hook, knocking Sheppard out of the game with a concussion. It was early, but it seemed like it might be a long day for the VRC.
Travis Sheppard leaves the field after suffering a concussion Nov. 23.

But the Rowers’ forward pack settled in and played tough at the ensuing breakdowns, despite some aggressive and exceptional rucking by the Brit Lions.

About 7 minutes in, the Rowers built on that rucking and ball retention when Steve MacGillivray darted for a 20-metre power run, beating three defenders. MacGillivray offloaded to Tom Power at the 6-metre line and Power dove across the line for five points. The convert was missed and the score was 5-3.

Try.
For the next 15 minutes both squads fought it out in the centre of the pitch, rarely wandering inside either 22-metre line. It was a back and forth war of attrition with both squads rucking well and creating turnovers. The Rowers’ forward pack showed its dominance first in the rucks and mauls, then in the scrums, by running over the Brit Lions in each set piece.

But the Brits were able to capitalize on a Rowing Club turnover after they punted a kick-and-chase ball inside the Red and White’s five-metre line. Despite getting back to recover the ball, the Rowers lost the pill in contact and the Brits’ outside centre pounced on the prize, scampering a hard 10 metres for paydirt. After adding the convert, the VRC was down 10-5.

Jamie Overgaard and Brandon Kaye make a tackle.
The Rowers’ dominance in the scrums continued for the rest of the half (and game) and with about 10 minutes to play in the opening frame, the squad created a turnover ball by driving back a Brit Lions’ scrum. MacGillivray took a subsequent pop pass from Ben James and touched it down under the posts. With the convert, the squad was back on top 12-10.

For the final 10 minutes of the half the Brit Lions inflicted some incredible running and sustained pressure on the Rowing Club. The Thirsty Thirds did nothing but tackle as the play was all in their end. But defense held and the score at the interval remained the same.

SECOND HALF

As the second half opened, the Rowers continued their strong defensive play and scrum dominance. They imposed two run-over scrums in a row on the Brit Lions, creating turnover ball that was birthed at their forwards’ feet. And surprise forward Brandon Kaye offered some galloping, power runs down the pitch.

The Rowers were playing well, but they allowed little mental mistakes to creep in when they had the ball – though their defensive play was irreproachable. Whenever the squad ran with the ball, they seemed to knock it on, or lose it in contact – either by running in too high, or not going to deck soon enough. However, the dominance in the scrums prevented the opposition from converting these mistakes into precious points.

Second half.
The pattern continued for about 15 minutes until the Brit Lions fullback was penalized for a high tackle. On the ensuing lineout, Jamie Overgaard took the ball at the back of a driving maul and forced the pack to surge forward. The squad then worked the ball across the field through hands and Franco Scodeller scored in the corner – 17-10 with 15 to go.

The Brit Lions fought back for the next ten minutes and exacted intense pressure. The Delta squad was running hard and had the Rowers on the back foot. After the Rowers gave up a penalty near their own 10-metre line, a big Brits’ kick looked like it would give them a lineout near the VRC five-metre line.

Second half.

But Nathan Tough launched himself into the sky at the boundary and speared the ball with one hand. He pulled it into his body and in the same motion counter-punted the ball back down the field. His kick narrowly escaped the hands of a streaking Brit Lion who chased his side’s penalty-punt offering. Tough’s kick bounced once near the 50-metre line and veered 90 degrees west, floating into touch to the cheers of the Rowing Club supporters.

It was the definitive moment of the second half, as the Rowers seemed to garner renewed momentum from the play and they stormed back down the pitch. With three minutes to go, Andy Donn sealed the Bowl victory when he lunged over the line after taking a pop from Overgaard. Donn was first hit at the four-metre line, but he folded the would-be tackler in half and rambled on to touch the ball down, stretching the score to 22-10.

Overgaard offloads to Andy Donn. Donn would score one second later.

In the final minute Ben James was awarded a red card from the referee for chirping and he took a long, slow walk across the pitch to Nick Coles’ beer cooler.

Defense was the key to the game as the Rowers made a number of first-up tackles, aggressively attacked defensive scrums, and held the Brit Lions off the score sheet for the final 58 minutes of the game.

Thirds cage MOB; Prems & 1sts fall to Burnaby (UPDATE)

Thirds earn birth in bowl final—

The Rowers 3rd team battle the Chilliwack Crusaders earlier this year. The Squad earned
a birth in the  fall season's bowl final and face the Brit Lions Nov. 23 at Klahanie.
BROCKTON OVAL—The Rowing Club came away with one victory and suffered two defeats on their home pitch Nov. 16. The 3rds (4-4) were victories over SFU’s Mountain Old Boys, while the 1sts (2-3) and premiers (3-2) both fell to first place sides from Burnaby Lake RFC. This weekend, Nov. 23, will be the last weekend of games until the spring half begins Feb. 15 when the Rowers host the Meraloma Club at Brockton.

3RDS

The Thirsty Thirds scored six tries on the MOB, earning the squad a 34-14 win and a berth in the fall-season bowl final at Klahanie Park this weekend. They’ll put their .500 record on the line versus the Brit Lions “B” team at 1 p.m.

“I’m super proud of the effort,” said coach Kelly Egilsson after the match. “Our rucking was greatly improved, and for the first time in weeks Chris Gaydon and Jesse Yanke had clean ball to work with.”

He noted the team played great defence and got really stingy in the second half when the MOB started to run hard off the sides of rucks. He added that a strong week of practice and a good pre-game workout helped kick-start the victory.

“I think yesterday showed the importance of having someone in the backline taking on the line straight, hard, and at pace,” co-coach Simon Taylor added. “Too often we continue to try to attack flat-footed out of frustration.”

Taylor said the squad has shown great improvement individually and as a group over the 2013 fall season and the semi-final double-u showed that. He added that despite the strong performance the squad will need to improve its positional play – down to the man – if they hope to beat the Brit Lions.

The Brits (2-3) nearly doubled up on the Surrey Beavers last week running out a 37-22 victory at John Oliver Park.

1STS

The Rowers Firsts got off to a poor start at home against Burnaby Lake, surrendering two tries early on. The squad’s tackling, defense, and rucking left much to be desired as a well-drilled Burnaby side controlled the game at will. The Rowers managed only two penalty kicks in the first half while surrendering three tries.

An obviously disappointed coach Jeremy Sabell told his charges at the half they plainly lacked passion. Some frank and forthright talk from substitute 8-Man Michael Jordan seemed to bolster the lackluster side with some renewed focus as they trotted out for the second frame.

A chippy, physical second half saw substitute fly half James Roughan and flanker “Gentleman” Jim Corbet both score tries. Roughan slotted both conversions. Final score: 41-20 for the visitors.

Despite the second half’s renewed focus, it was evident the Rowers will have to improve their scrummaging, conditioning, and defense if they are going to compete Nov. 23 against James Bay in the Ferguson Cup. JBAA are (2-3) after losing 35-19 to the Caps last week.

PREMIERS

First-place Burnaby Lake side, with a smattering of former Rowers and some members of team B.C. in the lineup, looked terrific in their solid 47-19 victory over the Red and White at Brockton Oval.

The Rowers top side did not loose for lack of effort, maintaining characteristically strong play, both in tight against the breakdowns and outside in open field play, as they stood up to the Lakers’ power runners. Burnaby played at an exceptional pace and flawlessly executed their set pieces and set plays.

Bright spots in the losing effort included: Caleb Hansen playing the inside-centre position and streaking for several long runs through traffic, including scoring a try; and full-back Kevin “The Knack” Gurniak and winger Billy Newman carrying the ball well all afternoon, each smudging the green for tries.

It was no coincidence the fastest Rowers were the only ones to find the in-goal as the visitors displayed an ample measure of speed. Substitute scrumhalf Henry Recinos kicked an impressive conversion from the corner on Hansen’s try. (Starting scrumhalf Darren Harris slotted one previous conversion.)

The Rowers battle for the Cox Cup with James Bay (the current holders) when they meet at MacDonald Park on Saturday. The Cox Cup is one of Canada’s oldest amateur challenge trophies, rivalling the Yates Cup (1898) and the Challenge Trophy (1913), and perhaps this country's oldest rivalry game.

JBAA are 3-2 after dropping their match 14-7 at Klahanie Park last week. That game, was featured on the BCRU website. Anyone who can’t travel to Victoria to support the club can get a look at the competition the VRC will face Nov. 23 by clicking here.

Rowers sink Vikings

Premier side wins third match in a row--

By Braden Maccke
VRC Nation.
BROCKTON OVAL--The Vancouver Rowing Club claimed its third win in a row Nov. 2 when they downed the University of Victoria Vikings 18-11 in CDI Premiership action. With the victory, the VRC improves to 3-1 in league play.

In other club action, the first division side fell to UVic’s undefeated Norsemen squad 29-8, while the third division team lost to the Brit Lions ‘A’ Team, 46-17.

3RDS

The Rowers started flat out of the gate after trickling to the pitch in dribs and drabs. As the game began, the forwards battled hard up front, only to see the backs make poor decisions that almost always proved costly in the wet conditions. The 3rds continually ran the ball from deep in their end, avoiding a kick and pressure game, but the team only managed to score three tries from this strategy.

In the second half, the Rowing Club over-committed to many breakdowns, thus lacking the ability to match the Brit Lions man for man in open play when possession reversed. This resulted in a futile counterattack for the squad as they were out-manned by the opposition each time they created turnover ball.

The game was “an amazing display for 75 minutes of what not to do tactically in the rain,” lamented head coach Simon Taylor after the match. “The last five minutes saw us play the rugby we are capable of and have played all season. But it was too little, too late.”

1STS

Despite a good start against a strong, well-drilled UVic Norsemen team, the VRC understudies lost a disappointing, physical match at home by a score of 29-8.

Both sides ran impact lines up the middle to take advantage of Brockton Oval’s wet conditions, but the Vikes did so more successfully than the home team. While scrummaging went generally well, the Rowers made errors at the lineouts as they failed to display their customary sharpness in the wet weather. The Norsemen took every advantage and made the Rowers pay for errors.

Penalties hurt the side and this reporter lost count of them before the first half came to a close. Martin Ericksson scored VRC’s lone try on a strong streak up the wing, and fly half James Roughan slotted the penalty kick.

PREMIERS

It was another characteristically excellent performance from the VRC’s top side, as they beat the visitors from UVic 18-11 at Brockton. The Rowers looked both strong and hungry in the rucks, mauls, and set pieces.

Though down 8-5 early, VRC ran tireless lines, limited their penalty count, and took care of the ball with strong play from the pack. Injuries at the back row positions forced the Rowers to field some of their less experienced loose forwards. Youngsters Sam Sayler, Connor Leduc, and Quinn Cowie (holding a combined age of 60) held their own in the pack, despite the illegality of their right to imbibe south of the 49th. The back-row ruggers had some noticeably strong carries and hard tackles in key situations.

“The performance of our reserves was key to the win,” coach Jeremy Sabell noted. “The boys are really playing for each other right now. And playing from behind doesn’t seem to bother them.”

Standings current to Nov. 15.

Stalwart fullback Alex Ackerley and recent returnee Leduc both scored big tries. Scrumhalf Darren Harris took full advantage of two penalty kicks and replacement scrummy Henry Recinos kicked a beautiful conversion from the sidelines to seal the win.

“It was a game very much conditioned by the weather and we had to alter our game plan to accommodate that,” added Sabell. “Although our kicking wasn’t perfect by any means, UVic also struggled in that area and we seemed to come off even if not a bit ahead due to consistent pressure from our kick-chasers. UVic had some territorial advantage over us through the match, but our defense was superb apart from one key letdown where they were allowed to score on a reverse field movement. It was a Rowing Club Academy graduate, James Pitblado, who scored for UVic though, so silver lining there.”

Sabell also noted that he was pleased with his squad’s adherence to the key goals of aggressive defence, limited penalties, limited turnovers, and pressure on the kicks.

“We were able to take points out of nearly every trip into the UVic 22-metre area. It was a great team effort and I was especially pleased by how well our young backrow played.”

NOVEMBER 9

Bye week for all three teams.

Rowers clip Caps at Klahanie

Premier side picks up second win--

By Braden Maccke

Matt Brown digs a ball out of ruck in the 3rds game at Klahanie Park Oct. 26.
The 3rds fell to the Caps 36-14.
NORTH VANCOUVER – The Vancouver Rowing Club built on their first victory of the season in the CDI Premiership by adding a second win in successive weeks when they downed their cross-bridge rivals Capilano R.F.C. 25-22. All three squads travelled to Klahanie Park Oct. 26, but both the 1sts and 3rds dropped their matches.

Third Division

The 3rds got off to a slow start and allowed the Caps to score a few early tries. But after some solid goal-line defense the Rowers took the game to the other end and capitalized. Steve "Tugboat" Gregorig first slotted a three and Jamie Overgaard touched down a try to narrow the score to 12-8 about halfway through the first half. Before the whistle the Rowers added another penalty and the Caps added another try, bringing the score up to 19-11 for the home side heading into halftime. In the second half the Rowers only managed to add three more points while the Caps added two more tries. Final score: 36-14.

First Division

Despite strong lineouts and generally good play, the Rowers B team lost to their rivals by a 37-23 margin.

In a characteristically outstanding performance at flanker, Scylar Dumas scored a well-deserved try, James “Jimmy One” Roughan scored a try and hit well-kicked drop-goal, and Andrew Meakin notched a penalty and a conversion. Centre back Nic Samija was denied what would have been his sixth try in five games as the ref ruled the placement had occurred on a second movement. The Rowers played hard rugby, but ultimately fell short by two tries.

Premier Division

The Rowing Club’s premier division side posted another exciting road victory, winning in dramatic fashion. It may have been the most technically proficient game the Rowers top side has delivered in 2013. The VRC took advantage of a dry pitch to use speedy backs and tireless support play to gain the edge over a very strong Capilano side.

The VRC fell behind 15 – 0 early, but did not lose resolve. Closing the gap, scrum half Darren Harris slotted a penalty kick, fly half Doug Crowe scored a drop goal, and winger Caleb Hansen scored a try before the half to bring the Rowers within two.

The VRC crossed the goal line twice in the second half as centre David Andersen and substitute centre Karl Mudzamba both put in tries for their home club. With a 25 – 22 lead, the Rowers found themselves defending their own goal line in the final minutes for the second time in as many weeks. During the defensive stand, a Capilano player suffered a serious spinal injury, forcing the referee to resume play on the opposite goal line as the player was attended to by first responders. After being stopped dead by strong Rowing Club tacklers, the Capilanos tried to move the ball outside, knocked it on, and caused the final whistle.
